Chicken and Egg dilemma
Commonly recognised formal elements and common features of a specific genre need to be identified.

This made me consider that genre can be inneffective because most films tent to overlap and can not be pacific for each film. Although I do think it chooses the most appropriate one for which the film fits into best, this then gives viwers a rough idea of what a film is, without much explanation needed.
