Narrative theory

The todorov's narrative theory explains how narrative has two parts, structure and elements.
The 5 stages to each film are:
1- state of equilibrium (normality)
2-distribution to the equilibrium
3-recognition to the distribution
4-attempt to repair damage
5- return to equilibrium or a new equilibrium

An example of these 6 stages would be in the film 17 again:
1- The mother and farther are together in high school and are a happy couple expecting a child.
2-The couple break up and the farther is sent back to being 17 again.
3- The families life is turnt upside down, and the farther tries to become friends with his son, and be part of the family.
4- The father tries to explain the situation to the mother.
5- The farther becomes himself again and gets back with the wife.

Improvements:
The general examples of the stages...
1 - A normal day to day to life you would expect of the characters, teenagers getting up and going to school, a mother getting her children to and from school, adults going to work, nothing standing out and everyone generally content with there lives. The audience should be able to relate to what's going on to there normal life's or people they know, this also make the distribution stand out more.
2- A problem or something out of the norm happens, the teenager gets attacked on the way to school, or a dramatic row happens with someone, the adult could go crazy at work or get sacked, the "happy family" could get divorced or a character could die. This caused a plot to the film and keeps the audience engaged.
3- Recognition would be the character showing a reaction to what has happened, they become angry and however caused the problem or upset with the damage the problem caused.
4- An attempt to repair the damage would be them trying to put a stop to the people who attacked the school girl, the row is tried to be resolved or the adult tries to get there job back.
5- Finally it goes back to normal or something better. For example the adult gets her job back or a even better job, the family sort there problems and don't get divorced or find new happier partners.

  1. WWW: You have applied this theory well to 17 Again, showing good understanding of the different stages of the theory.
EBI: You had explained the different stages in more detail before going into the task. What do you normally expect from each stage? What are the features?
